Cosmetic Tattoo FAQ

Lashes & Brows

What is Brow Lamination?

Brow Lamination is a treatment that relaxes your brow hairs so they can stand in the direction you desire. The service temporarily straightens your brow hairs and makes them more pliable so they can be easily manipulated and shaped in virtually any direction, resulting in fuller and fluffy looking brows. Results can last 6-8 weeks.

Do I need to prep for my lash appointment?

Prior to your appointment, try your best to arrive without any eye makeup, do not curl your lashes or wear mascara the day of your appointment. It will help minimize the cleanup time and allow more time for lashing. If you wear contacts please make sure you have them removed prior to arriving for your appointment.

Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes?

No. Lash extensions will only be applied to adult lashes strong enough to support the weight of the extension. Young (baby) lashes are left to allow them to fully develop and when it comes times to re-lash, we have new strong lashes to bond to. Lash extensions will not cause your natural eyelashes to fall out. Remember that your natural lashes have their own life cycle of falling and growing – like the hair found elsewhere on your body. It's hard to notice small lashes falling out, but when attached to a thicker, longer lash they become much more noticeable! Most people will shed between 3-5 lashes per day. Once the extensions are removed, your own eyes may appear smaller, your natural lashes, shorter and sparser because you've been accustomed to a full set of longer, thicker lashes.

It's my highest priority to ensure the health and integrity of your natural lashes stay intact.

How long will my lash extensions last?

Your new lashes will last between 2 to 4 weeks depending on your skincare routine, lifestyle and your own natural lash life cycle. To maintain the full look of your lashes, it will require you to maintain refills every 2-3 weeks.

Do I need a patch test?

A patch test is suggested for first time clients who have allergies and/or sensitivities to products used during the application of eyelash extensions. The patch test consists of applying 3-5 extensions per eye that mimic the length and curl of your natural lashes 48-72 hours prior to your appointment. Even with a patch test preformed; it is still possible to have a reaction to the products used. It is also possible to develop allergies or sensitivities to the products over time. There is no fee for the patch test.

*If you would like to schedule a patch test please contact Kate directly.

What type of fill should I book?

We currently book our fill appointments by time. This ensures appointments dont run late and you are not surpised by the cost of your fill at check out. However, for first time fillers this might be confusing on what to book.

If you are unsure here are my recommendations based on the average lash cycle:

45 minute fill - within 2 weeks as a quick touchup

60 minute fill - 2-3 weeks

90 minute fill - 3-4 weeks

After 4 weeks it will be considered a new set.

Cosmetic Tattoo

What is cosmetic tattooing?

Cosmetic tattooing, also referred to as semi-permanent makeup or micropigmentation, is the process of implanting colour pigment beneath the surface of the skin by means of tiny, sterile, disposable needles to produce the appearance of hair strokes, makeup, or to enhance the natural features of the face. The purpose of cosmetic tattooing is to enhance the natural features of a client. These pigments are designed to gently fade over time. Fading is desired as it allows the artist to make changes to colour and shape over the years as client’s natural colouration and facial changes occur.

Is the procedure painful?

A highly-effective, topical anesthetic cream and gel are used for numbing before and during your procedure. Pain threshold levels vary from person to person and every effort is made to ensure you remain comfortable for the entirety of the procedure. Having this service performed during your menstrual cycle may increase discomfort during your procedure. If you are a frequent smoker, the topical anesthetics used during the treatment will not be as effective. If you have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, be aware that this may affect your sensitivity tolerance to the procedure.

What is the difference between Microblading and Nano Brows?

Microblading is a popular technique used to implant pigment into the skin to create the appearance of a fuller brow. A collection of 7 to 16 fine needles configured into a blade shape will be used to create thin cuts into the skin. These cuts are then filled with pigment to create a realistic appearance of hair. Microblading is best suited for dry-normal skin types.

Nano Brows (also known as nano needling or micropigmentation) is created with one single needle and a permanent makeup machine. The machine is similar to a conventional tattoo machine but is designed for use on on our delicate faces and is much more gentle and quiet.

Generally speaking, both microblading and nano needling will give a similar end result. That being said, nano needling is suited for all skin types and will produce a more crisp hairstroke compared to it's microbladed counterpart.

Nano Brow's is much more gentle on the skin compared to microblading. Rather then cutting into the skin nano needling will puncture small wells for the pigment to fill causing less trauma. With microblading, the pins used to create the blade shape are more rigid than the flexible single needle used for nano needling. Nano Brow's also comes with the benefits of offering a more natural and crisp result, with less risks of the pigment being implanted too deep. Basically, see nano needling as microblading but with more precision and accuracy.

While the results of your microblading procedure can be expected to last between 12 to 18 months, the results of a nano needling can last up far longer – up to three years with touch-up sessions.

If you're not sure which technique is best for you get in touch with our team and we’d be happy to share our insights with you.

What are the pigments made of?

The pigments used in cosmetic tattooing come in a variety of colours specially formulated with iron oxide, an ingredient safe for the skin. We do not use pigments made from organic ingredients, such as vegetables as they have a high risk of carrying bacteria and causing allergic reactions. Because color is implanted just underneath the dermal layer of the skin, the resulting shade is soft and muted, unlike regular cosmetic makeup that sits on the surface of the skin.

Can I get tattooed while pregnant or nursing?

As a precaution, we do not perform cosmetic tattooing on pregnant or nursing women.

How long does cosmetic tattooing last?

Cosmetic tattoo treatments are considered semi-permanent and will not wash off, however, they will fade over time and may need to be refreshed every 1-2 years. Frequency of sessions depends on a number of factors including: the pigment colour used (lighter colours fade faster), lifestyle (sun exposure), and if any chemical peels/laser come into contact with treated areas. Please note that final results can not be guaranteed as each unique skintype will hold pigments differently and break down at different rates. We will re-evaluate how your skin has received the pigment at your second session and make any changes necessary. Multiple sessions are normal for cosmetic tattoo procedures, with each new procedure requiring a minimum of 2 visits. Your second session can be booked no sooner than 6 weeks after the initial appointment. Additional sessions will be charged according to our current pricing.

How many treatments are needed?

For most clients, a minimum of two treatments are usually needed, at least 6 weeks apart. With most procedures, the colour looks dramatically lighter after the first week. Some clients prefer this, while others opt for a bolder look. At the second session, we will assess the colour retention and make adjustments as necessary. Everyone heals differently and at different rates. If your cosmetic tattoo does not heal perfectly after the first session, do not worry! We can always go darker and add more density at your next appointment.

What factors will effect the longevity of my tattoo?

Sun exposure: The sun will extremely soften the look of your tattoo, so sunblock should be used (once healed) to prolong your enhancement. The regeneration of skin cells: The longer the regeneration takes, the longer the pigment holds. The speed at which the skin absorbs the pigment: The slower the absorption, the longer the pigment will hold. The choice of colour: Some colours fade quicker than others, e.g. a blonde colour will fade quicker than a dark brown colour. The area of treatment: Enhancements to the face, for example, fade more quickly due to constant exposure. Bleeding during the procedure: Any bleeding during the tattooing procedure will reduce the amount of pigment absorption. Alcohol and certain medications act as blood-thinners and should not be taken prior to and following your appointment.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment?

If you have an ideal shape and colour in mind, bring a few reference photos with you to your appointment. If you plan to go on a vacation, it is recommended to plan your trip a minimum of 14 days after the procedure. We require our clients to avoid any blood thinning medication for a minimum of 72 hours prior to their appointment. This includes Vitamin E, Aspirin, Niacin, fish oil supplements, and Ibuprofen. Do not drink any alcohol the night before and day of your appointment and limit the amount of caffeine you consume. If you have been on prescription Accutane in the past, you MUST wait at least one year before considering this procedure. It is highly recommended that you avoid sun and tanning bed exposure for 30 days BEFORE and AFTER your procedure. If you show up for your appointment with a new tan or a sunburn, you will need to reschedule and will forfeit your deposit. As your skin exfoliates from a sunburn, it will take the pigment with it.

If you are booking for Lip Blush please visit your doctor to get an antiviral prescription for simplex virus herpes as the procedure can cause a flare up. You will need to take the antiviral 5 days prior, on the day of and 5 days after your appointment. Additionally, if you have had lip fillers you must wait at least 4 weeks before your lip blush appointment.

If you are booking for Eyeliner you must discontinue use of lash serums 4 weeks prior as it may cause skin sensitivity. If you wear lash extensions these must be removed prior to the appointment and not reapplied until healed. If you have an eye infection or stye we cannot perform the treatment.

How will my tattoo look immediately after?

Your semi-permanent makeup will appear darker and more intense than expected for the first few days. This will gradually lighten during the complete healing process. Redness and swelling is minimal.

How will my cosmetic tattoo look in the future?

During your appointment, we will analyze your skin's undertone to anticipate how pigment colours will fade in the future. We will also mix pigments to ensure colour blends well with your existing eyebrow and hair colour. The majority of our clients' cosmetic tattoos stay true to color and lighten naturally over time. There are some cases, however, where colours may fade to different tones according to the individual’s response to the pigments (like lifestyle and iron deficiencies). Many factors affect these changes. At your next appointment, we will re-analyze how your body has responded to the initial colour. Special formula alteration to correct the colour and to prevent further colour change is made at this time. Your eyebrow tattoo will eventually look softer and have more of a "powdered" look. This happens with all clients as the skin ages. To keep your hair strokes looking good, a refresher appointment is suggested every 1 to 2 years. Results vary with each client.

What should I know for long term care?

A good sunscreen should be applied daily AFTER healing and is required to help keep colour true. As with any tattoo, sun exposure will make the colour soften faster. Fading speed depends on your skintype, lifestyle, sun exposure, pigment colour used, broken capillaries, and if any chemical peels were done after your procedure. If you are planning a chemical peel, laser treatment or other medical procedure, please inform the technician that you have had a cosmetic tattoo. Careful application must be taken to avoid affecting the tattooed area.
